LS. The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter of 19 November, received on 21 December [1813]. He was informed on the favourable turn of events [in the War of 1812] in Upper Canada and Lower Canada, with victories at Châteauguay by [Irumberry de] Salaberry [on 26 October 1813], and [Fort George on the] Niagara River by Drummond [on 10 December 1813]. The writer is aware that reinforcements were sent to ensure superiority over Lake Ontario, but does not know why the expedition to the Mississippi, under Conran, was stopped. He suggests that a dockyard and large vessels be built at Machitas Bay, in order to recover Lake Erie, and rejoices at Warren being replaced by Cochrane. PF notes.
