ALS. [Lombard de] Bouvens, his vicar general in London, informed the writer of the addressee's keen interest in the diocese of Québec; the addressee is also known to have informed the Ursulines of A. [Merici]'s canonization [on 24 May 1807]. The diocese of Québec is said to be immense, comprising the whole of North America, except for the United States, from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Lake Superior and past it, with c.400,000 Catholics, one coadjutor [Panet] and c.160 priests. The Holy See, citing the example of the vicariate apostolic in Newfoundland (established 1796), suggested that the diocese be subdivided into a number of bishoprics, or that at least three coadjutors be appointed. This did not win the [English] government's approval, and it now seems that the latter wants to unite all North American bishoprics under a patriarchate to be established in Québec.

Although the bp.'s existence, after the Treaty [of Paris] of [10 February] 1763, is very precarious, the good attitude of the British government has allowed the regular appointment of bp.s. The addressee is asked to intercede with the British court so that the diocese be subdivided, although he is warned that this may lead to the court's claim to appoint future bp.s. The writer suggests that the bp. of Québec be enabled to suggest three candidates and leave the final selection with the British court. PF notes.
