C. The writer recognizes the addressee as Roman Catholic bp. of Québec and as a corporate body. The addressee is known to have been coadjutor of Denaut, bp. of Québec, in compliance with Pius VII's bull dated from Venice, 26 April 1800 [see C 004], to have replaced Denaut upon his death on 27 January, to have taken possession of the cathedral [Notre-Dame-de-Québec] on 27 January 1806, to have taken the oath of loyalty on the same day before the Executive Council of Lower Canada and its President [T. Dunn; see SOCG 011], and to have since exercized his authority over Upper Canada, Lower Canada, New Brunswick, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, and Iles-de-la-Madeleine. The writer also recognizes Panet as the addressee's coadjutor, in compliance with Pius VII's bull of 12 August 1806.
