M. A note indicating that a letter similar [to that to Panet; see Letter 240] is sent to the addressee. [The text read: The addressee is informed that J.-B.-F. Fauvel, who was born in France, in the diocese of Coutances, [on 3 May 1796], was attached to the diocese of Rennes in 1818, and then to the diocese of Québec on 1 February 1823. There, on 20 May 1823 he was tonsured by the addressee's late predecessor [Plessis], and granted four minor orders by Lartigue, bp. of Telmissus, on 23 May 1824. As he wanted to return in his country, Plessis granted him dimissorial letters on 4 November 1823 so that he could be ordained in any other diocese. At 31, he arrived in Rome, accompanied by Tajorakaron [Teoragaron], allegedly the son of an Iroquois prince.

Fauvel now asks to be appointed ad titulum missionis, but the writer has no knowledge of Fauvel's qualifications, and would like to know why he left a region where priests are in such need. Furthermore, the addressee should inform on the religious needs of the Iroquois, what is the authority of their leaders, what is the significance of the turtle and the elk symbols].
