C. The addressee is aware that for two years the erection of a new bishopric in Upper Canada, separated from the diocese of Québec, has been discussed, and that there seemed to be a general consensus over it, even on the part of the late Plessis, abp. of Québec. The CG of 20 December [1825; see Acta 135] made its final decision on the matter, later confirmed by the Pope [Leo XII, at the audience granted to Caprano on 8 January 1826; see Acta 136]. On 1 February [1826], however, the news of Plessis's death [on 4 December 1825] reached Rome. Consequently, the Pope ordered that apostolic letters be sent to the addressee, establing the new bishopric of Kingston. To A. McDonell's apostolic letters [see Varia 332] are sent, which transfer him from the bishopric of Rhaesina to the bishopric of Kingston [see Lettere 224].

Furthermore, Poynter, bp. of Alia, vicar apostolic in the London district, is asked to provide a fixed income for the new bishopric [see Lettere 225].
