LS [in John MacDonald (c.1791-1845)'s handwriting, signed by McDonell]. The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter of 23 [recte 25] February [1826; see Lettere 224], with the apostolic letters erecting the bishopric of Kingston as separate from the archbishopric of Québec and as directly dependent on the Holy See, and appointing the writer as new bp.. He will soon write to Panet, [a]bp. of Québec, and to Poynter, vicar apostolic in the London district, on the matter of his revenues, although he doubts whether any help can be received from them and hopes that a special subsidy be granted to Upper Canada on the part of the Holy See via Gradwell. The writer recalls that, during his [spring 1825] visit to Rome, the abp. of Iconium [Caprano] had promised the writer to accept four students at Collegio Urbano.

Thus, the writer will send two or three of them at the beginning of next year [1827], if PF agrees to cover their travel expenses from New York to Leghorn. The writer thanks the addressee for Weld's appointment as his coadjutor [which was decided upon in the CG of 24 April 1826; see Acta 146], and briefly describes his recent visitation of his diocese, the increasing number of faithful, the 10 churches built, and the dearth of priests, and asks that he be allowed to begin the Jubilee Year on Septuagesima Sunday of the coming year [11 February 1827].
