MS. Two requests are contained in the letter of 16 August [1826; see Varia 230], in which the bp. of Kingston in Upper Canada [A. McDonell] describes the state of his diocese: [1] that the Jubilee Year be extended, due to the fact that the dearth of priests and the constantly increasing number of faithful (10 new churches were built) has made it impossible to make use of its privileges during the current year. On this point, the writer recalls that the Jubilee has already been extended for another two years in all mission territories, and suggests that in Upper Canada the said Jubilee be extended until Septuagesima Sunday of 1828 [recte 11 February 1827];
[2] that a special subsidy be granted to Upper Canada on the part of the Holy See via Gradwell, as the subsidy that had been promised by the English government was subsequently granted to the [prospective] new Protestant bp. of Upper Canada [Strachan, actually appointed bp. of Toronto only in 1839]. On this matter, the writer points out that this was caused by PF's slowness (eight months) in making a decision ("usando della sua usata lentezza[,] che nella debolezza de' miei lumi, non ardisco biasimare"), and that the suggestion that the new bp. consulted with the abp. of Québec [Panet] and Poynter in order to find a solution to the problem of his revenues is now inapplicable.
[The following in Caprano's handwriting] At the audience granted on 17 December 1826, the Pope decided that the Jubilee be extended from Septuagesima Sunday [11 February] 1827 to Septuagesima Sunday [3 February] 1828, and that a subsidy be paid to the new bp., to be shared by PF and Dataria Apostolica.
