Cs. [1] Flaget to [Della Somaglia], [Bardstown], 8 November 1824. The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter. He recalls his being a Sulpician like the bp. of Telmissus [Lartigue], his fruitful visit to Québec in 1818, the fact that the opposing factions in the Montréal dispute have written to him. He is against the erection of a bishopric in Montréal, because the town had, prior to the subdivision, almost 140 priests, and could well be administered by the bp. of Québec [Plessis], who can reach it in two days. He also recalls that the bp. of Québec never made public his title as abp., the privileges and traditions of the Montréal Seminary, the stature of its superior [Roux], the hostile attitude of the new Governor [of Lower Canada, Dalhousie], and the English government's attempts to seize the goods of the Sulpicians.

[2] Flaget to [Della Somaglia], [Bardstown], 1 February 1825. The writer tells the history of the Montréal dispute during the past 15 months. He recalls the Sulpicians' long history and tradition and the seignorial role of their Superior [Roux]. According to the writer, the Sulpicians of Montréal kept the bp. of Telmissus [Lartigue] with them in friendship for four months after his consecration [of 21 January 1821] and treated him as suffragan of the abp. of Québec [Plessis]. Dissension arose when the bp. of Telmissus was asked to leave the Montréal Seminary in order to protect the trustees' privileges and he decided to build his own church. The writer foresees difficulties between the bp. of Telmissus and the abp. of Québec, because borders between their jurisdictions are unclear and priests are often moved from one to the other.
