Cs of two letters [in Gradwell's handwriting]: [1] Poynter to Gradwell, London, 24 August 1819: He informs that Plessis, [a]bp. of Québec, currently in London, is having great difficulties with Bathurst, Secretary of State for [War and] the Colonies, because the latter had not been informed of the [Holy See's] intention of appointing him abp.; the writer will meet Bathurst on the next day, and points out that there is now also a Protestant bp. in Québec [Mountain]; [2] [Poynter] to [Gradwell], [London], 27 August [1819]: Bathurst, whom the writer met on 25 August [1819], asked him to inform Rome of his displeasure at the fact that he had not been informed of the [Holy See's] intention of establishing the archbishopric of Québec, a matter that will cause him problems with his Parliament, in spite of his own support to the Catholic church.
