LS. The writer acknowledges Fontana's letters of 28 July [see Lettere 122] and 15 November 1821. He asks for faculties on a par with those granted to the Montréal Seminary, whose members opposed his consecration [of 21 January 1821] and caused many disorders. His wish is to be appointed bp. of Montréal or vicar apostolic in the area, with powers distinct from those of the bishopric of Québec. In compliance with Fontana's request, he describes his church. It consists of 200,000 Catholics, 72 churches (mostly parish churches) or missions, 105 priests, no regular priests, three female monasteries (36 hospitalières [Hôtel-Dieu], 30 hospitalières of another kind [Hôpital Général], 80 of a congregation for girls [Congrégation de Notre-Dame]). There are 3,000 Indians, served by four missionaries.

There are 118 [Catholic] schools, with 162 teachers, 3,712 students (of whom 510 [male] students in the three Catholic colleges, 465 [female] students with the eight establishments of the above-mentioned nuns [Congrégation de Notre-Dame), besides 26 schools with 31 Protestant teachers who keep 191 Catholic students, and 13 schools under the influence of the government.
