M entitled "Tentatives de Mgr. L'Evèque de Québec [Plessis] pour s'emparer du Séminaire de Montréal". The bp. [Plessis], who is said to be submissive to the English government, to enjoy a pension of £1,000, and to improperly use the title of abp., is accused of taking possession of the goods of Jesuits and Recollets and of being in the process of doing the same with the Sulpicians, on the ground that the English might do it first. The bp. had the ruin of the Sulpicians in mind when, on 21 September 1821, he asked PF whether a priest could be attached to a community of secular priests without his bp.'s consent, and whether a bp. could use priests belonging to a similar community [see the undated request in SOCG 386].

Reference is made to the bp. of Québec [Denaut]'s previous attempts, in 1801/2, when he had tried to convince the Sulpician superior [Roux] to accept his coadjutor [Plessis]'s residence in Montréal, and in 1819, when he had chosen a Sulpician [Lartigue] as his [suffragan and auxiliary] bp. in Montréal. The latter, who wanted a full bishopric and not a title in partibus [as bp. of Telmissus], only complied after being urged by the Pope [Pius VII], and later used the Montréal mob in order to gain residence in the Seminary, causing a schism similar to those of Philadelphia or New York.
