Cs of two letters, in the writer's handwriting, signed by the writer. [1] Plessis to Poynter, [Québec], 29 August 1824. The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter of 14 June [1824], received two days before. The addressee is asked to inform Bathurst that the writer is in favour of a bishopric in Upper Canada and even of another one in Montréal, whose district contains ten times as many Catholics. Difficulties might only come from Rome, not used to a system where there are many bp.s in the same country all depending from Rome, because one of them is usually appointed abp.. A Catholic abp. may also cause the English Court to promote the [Anglican] bp. [of Québec, Mountain] to the archiepiscopal dignity.

[2] Poynter to Gradwell, [London], 2 November 1824. Re Plessis's letter [of 29 August 1824; see above], the writer warns that, although the English government uses Catholics for its political ends, it really aims at the ruin of Catholicism in all its colonies and dependencies, as shown by the Ionian Islands and by the sending of Stuart [C.J. Stewart] as Protestant bp. in Upper Canada (Stuart is a good friend of [A.] McDonell's). Yet there seems to be no opposition to McDonell's appointment, because Bathurst knows that McDonell is "absolutely necessary to keep good order in Upper Canada, particularly among the Irish who are very numerous," has disbursed in the past "large amounts of money" to him, and has recently paid all his back dues. He will soon meet with Bathurst. Re PF's letter to Poynter of 27 November 1824 [see APF, Lettere, vol. 305, fol. 759v-760rv]. Bs: fol. 32v-33r.
