ALS. One year before [in his letter to Litta of 21 December 1818; see Acta 043] the writer asked the Holy See, via the bp. of Québec [Plessis], that Maguire, born in Halifax, fluent in French and English, be appointed as his coadjutor. The Holy See approved [in the CG of PF of 7 September 1819; see Acta 042], but Maguire wrote to the bp. of Québec that he refused to accept because he had not been previously informed. It now seems that the bp. of Québec's new candidate is his young and inexperienced vicar general, who does not speak English. The writer favours Long, a student at the Irish seminary in Paris, for the position, on whom information can be obtained from [the abp. of] Dublin [J.T. Troy]. He asks that, in case of his death, the [abp. of] Dublin be consulted, not the [abp. of] Québec.

A cathedral [St. Mary's] is being built in his province, there are c.100 young students in his seminary, and c.200 young girls in his school. He currently has four Irish priests (one disabled), one Scot, one French [Sigogne], one Canadian [Mignault], and two more [nationalities illegible]. PF S.
