Translation into Italian. The state of Michigan borders on Canada. Its capital, Detroit, contains some 350 Catholic families, and another 350 are at 120 miles from the town, two thirds of whom are French-Canadians (the remaining one third are English or Americans). Five thousand Indians live along the St. Joseph River. They still remember the preaching of the French Jesuits, and at Mackinaw the famous Jesuit "Macquoit" [Marquette?] is buried, worshipped by 1,200 converted Indians. PF notes (10 June 1822).
