Cs of two letters. [1] Desjardins to Malou, Québec, 10 August 1819. The writer testifies that Plessis's letter to Malou dated from Québec, 2 January [1819; see SOCG 192] is in the abp.'s handwriting, and that the attached C [see no. 2] is in the handwriting of the bp. of Saldes, his coadjutor [Panet]; that he himself wrote the letters of 8 January and 22 March [1819], dealing with C. Ffrench and Willcocks; that [C.-M. Boucher de] Boucherville's letter to Willcocks of 24 March [1819] was written before his eyes; that he is aware of Plessis's letter to Willcocks of 27 [recte 24] March [1819; see SOCG 189]; that he has often written to Willcocks censuring Ffrench's behaviour; that he knows that Plessis interdicted Ffrench because of his libertine behaviour on 26 August 1817 [see in SOCG 145, confirming the interdict], and that a C of the interdict was sent to the bp. of New York [Connolly].

Desjardins adds that his own personal acquaintance of Morisset and Lagarde, missionaries in the Miramichi region and Fredericton, convinced him that Ffrench's pecuniary avidity and dissolute customs damaged religion more than his collections (which he never publicly accounted for) helped the building of a few chapels. This C is certified and signed by Raby, and is dated from New York, 6 September 1819. [2] Plessis to Malou, [Québec], 2 January 1819 [in Panet's handwriting]. Plessis is not surprised that the abp. of Baltimore [Maréchal] and the bp. of Boston [Lefèbvre de Cheverus] refused to interfere with the affairs of the church of New York. When asked by the bp. [of New York], he will inform him of his opinion of Ffrench. Certified and signed by Panet.
