ALS ("A"). The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter of 9 August [1817; see Lettere 059], received at the end of November [1817], the 20 marriage dispensations and the confirmation of the indulgences. He does not know whether his letter of 15 October 1816 with enclosures have reached the addressee, and recalls Gerdil's letter to Hubert of 16 January 1796 [missing, but see Calendar 1622-1799, V 427-428], and Di Pietro's letter to the writer of 23 August 1806 [see Lettere 020]. He is in favour of the appointment of [A.] McDonell as vicar apostolic in Kingston, Upper Canada, and of [A.B.] MacEachern as vicar apostolic in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (with jurisdiction over Iles-de-la-Madeleine and New Brunswick). However, he recalls that E. Burke's appointment as vicar apostolic in Nova Scotia [in 1817] did not improve the state of religion in the province.

He also favours the erection of an archbishopric in Québec, and announces that a new and immense territory has recently been discovered in the North and the Northwest. In the spring of 1816 a missionary was sent there [Tabeau] but he was stopped on his way on account of the war between Selkirk [T. Douglas] and the Northwest Company; he will send another missionary at the earliest opportunity. PF notes (original of the ponenza of [the CG of] 23 November 1818).
