ALS. As soon as he arrived in Halifax, the writer informed [the addressee] that he had forwarded the latter's letter to the bp. of Québec [Plessis], but that he feared that the bp. would have refused it. To his surprise, the bp. approved it, as from the enclosure [see SOCG 054], which also shows the difficulties met with in trying to obtain permission to employ missionaries for the Christian Indians. The writer is not going to request any permission from the government, but will receive one or two Scottish priests sent by [A.] McDonell, his own prospective successor as vicar general in Upper Canada, currently in Halifax on his way to Europe. McDonell will probably be the bp. [Plessis]'s choice for a vicar [apostolic] in Upper Canada.

The writer describes the state of religion in Bermuda and in the Bahamas. He is unaware of any former jurisdiction over them; would accept to be entrusted with the jurisdiction over Bermuda, but would refuse to have the island as part of his district. If he is to be charged with Bermuda, then he will probably be able to send a Catholic priest there once a year. In the PS, the writer asks that his correspondence be sent to Halifax via London, care of M.W. Troy, 37 Old Broad Street. PF notes (to be translated; this letter is of the utmost importance, because it contains the bp. of Québec's approval of the erection of a vicariate apostolic in Nova Scotia).
