ALS. The writer acknowledges the addressee's interesting letter of 2 August [1816]. His own trip of the past year [1815] was very tiring, whereas that of the current year (from which he returned on 10 August) was easier. Mignault probably informed the addressee about the writer's decision re Halifax and FitzGerald. He believes FitzGerald is not good enough to replace Grace in Newfoundland, although the latter is now unable to perform his pastoral duties. As for the attempt on the part of Vincent [de Paul] to establish a Trappist school for the instruction of the savages of Nova Scotia, the whole idea might come down to nothing due to Sherbrooke's hostility to the project.

Although the writer would have preferred the erection of a bishopric in Nova Scotia, he will support a vicariate apostolic and the addressee as prospective vicar apostolic, and will write to Rome accordingly. He believes the addressee's trip to Baltimore to be of the utmost importance. A. McDonell sold some land he had bought for the Antigonish church to a Protestant doctor, one McDonell, contrary to the writer's advice; one should not marvel that his [?] sister claims the remainder.
