LS. Following the death of Denaut, bp. of Québec, on 17 January [1806], according to the bulls of 26 April 1800 [see C 004], the writer officially replaced the late bp. on 27 [January]. He gives an extract of the oath of loyalty that he is requested to take before the Governor [recte Administrator of Lower Canada, T. Dunn], as from Gerdil's request of 16 January 1796 to Hubert [missing, but see Calendar 1622-1799, V 427-428]. Twelve days after Denaut's death the writer appointed his coadjutor, Panet, 53, parish priest since 1778, for 25 years parish priest of L'Assomption-de-la-Sainte-Vierge [either Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption-de-Berthier or Notre-Dame-de-Liesse-de-la-Rivière-Ouelle] on the river Ouelle. He encloses the relating petition [see SOCG 012].

No archbishopric can be established without negotiations with the English court. Following Gerdil's proposals, he suggests coadjutorships in Montréal, Upper Canada and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Cape Breton [Island]). The state of religion in these areas is described. The writer requests dispensations, ordinary and extraordinary faculties, and a marriage dispensation for a 40-year-old Recollet.
