ALS. The writer recalls and cites from his letters [to Caprano] of 29 September [1827; see C 164] and 28 September [1828; see Acta 184], in which he had asked the addressee to obtain from the Pope [Leo XII] the appointment of a coadjutor. He had mentioned his poor health and the ethnic composition of the island (English, Scots, Irish, natives, etc.), which required special skills not to be found amongst the local missionaries. He had then recommended the Franciscan [Recollet] Fleming (known for four years), Sinnott (known for many years), and the Augustinian [T.] Browne (in the island for more than 15 years [since 1812]) as candidates, all about 38 years of age. The writer now wishes to withdraw Sinnott from the slate, because the latter was allowed to spend the six winter months in Ireland, but remained longer and spent the summer in Europe.

According to Kelly, bp. of Waterford [and Lismore], PF has already selected Meara, one of Kelly's priests, as coadjutor; the writer warns that Meara, a former Franciscan provincial of Ireland, is a dangerous person that is not to be trusted.
