PM. The writer's opinion re ecclesiastical affairs in the diocese of New York. As far as [C.] Ffrench is concerned, the addressees are reminded that he has been accused of having incurred substantial debts in Ireland and of misbehaviour in Québec. On [26] August 1817 [in SOCG 145] Ffrench was interdicted by the [a]bp. of Québec [Plessis] for seducing a young girl [Gaudin] and for stealing money belonging to the church of Saint John. However, little evidence is available, except for Raby's deposition [of 6 September 1819; see SOCG 207]. The letters of Plessis [to Willcocks, of 24 March 1819; see SOCG 189] and of [C.-M. Boucher de] Boucherville on the subject are too vague. According to the writer, although accusations against Ffrench are unproven, J. Connolly, bp. of New York, should expel him from his diocese.
