Events leading up to the formation of NATO on April 4, 1949. Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin meet at Yalta and Potsdam. Soon after, the Soviet Union takes over East European countries. Sequences on Soviet forces marching in Moscow as leaders look on, soldiers in Poland, Czechoskia, and other adjoining nations. The Poles go through a phony election. Jan Massaryk is defeated by communist sympathizers in Czechoslevakia of his funeral. Communist agitators foment civil unrest in Turkey, and Greece. Sequences on hardships, and destruction in Greece. Meanwhile, the US government institutes foreign aid and The Marshall plan and sparks more communist agitation in Europe. European countries unite in a Western Union under Field Marshall Montgomery. Sequences on cause of an implementation of the Berlin Air Lift. North Atlantic Treaty is signed on April 4, 1949. The Korean conflict begins.~General Eisenhower is named commander of NATO armed forces and is seen off by President Truman. Aerial and ground shots of Paris and, to a lesser extent, the other countries participating in NATO. Eisenhower speaks on need to rearm European nations. He is seen discussing strategy with Field Marshall B.L. Montgomery. Sequences on meeting of NATO military commanders and on Eisenhower's speech reformation of SHAPE H.Q. Final sequence on re-armament, troup movements, and on the need for still more arms. <39mn>
