Record information – Details Fonds/collection:YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONAccession:2000-0013Media:SoundPart:1 of 1Production date:1974-11-24Description:Muriel Arpin, vice chair of the Advisory Council of the Status of Women, speaks to a Manitoba Women's Institute audience about the actual legal situation of women within marriage, in Manitoba and in Canada in general. The speaker and the audience discuss such issues as dower rights, taxation of inherited property, gifts, the Murdoch vs Murdoch case, the Married Women's Property Act and assumptionms behind the current laws. Murdoch vs Murdoch was a benchmark legal case in 1973. An Alberta couple had worked together as ranchers and when they were divorced the wife asked for an equal share of the property, on the grounds that she was a partner in her husband's affairs. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that she owned only the property registered in her own name. The consequent outcry about this decision brought about social and legal change to family law. <90mn>Language:EnglishNotes:Detailed holdings information: -
