CH., N. to S.d.S.: The N. has understood his instructions [see no. 451] re the bp. of Québec [La Croix] and the bp. is eager to help the N. but is also afraid of offending the King [of France, Louis XIV] and thus remain deprived of the sustenance so necessary for the good of his diocese whose needs are now even greater because the seminary [of Québec] was recently consumed by fire. The bp. is worried about finding appropriate testimonies and the N. has suggested the notary who serves the nunziatura and failing this a direct approach to the king's ministers but there is great doubt about the outcome of this course of action. MN. deciphered 19 May [1703].
