ALS. The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter [of 16 Jan. 1796; see Lettere 429], that he received on 22 July 1796. He accordingly went to Québec (the trip took 42 days), where he was consecrated bp. of Thyatira [on 21 Sep. 1796]. On 2 Oct. he was on his way to Newfoundland, but informed that the island had fallen to the French, returned to Québec. He then left on 20 Oct. for Halifax, but a storm and some encroaching French ships led him astray to Guernsey (the voyage took 35 days), where he remained for 12 days, before going to Waterford. He lost most of his ornaments and all documents relating to his consecration, and will not be able to leave for Newfoundland before May [1797].
