M. E. Burke [1753-1820], vic. general of the bp. of Québec [J.-F. Hubert] and prefect of the missions of Upper Canada, wrote to PF on 15 Aug. 1797 [see C 236] on the state of his mission. Burke confirms that a bishopric in Montréal is necessary in order to cover to whole area from Fort Amhersbury to the Pacific Ocean; the bp. should be a Sulpician and must speak Gaelic and English, since the area is inhabited by 200 Scottish families, besides English and Irish. He also asks that the powers of the missionary [Levadoux] sent thither by the bp. of Baltimore [Carroll] be revoked, and that he himself be appointed prefect ap.. In a letter to the writer, the abp. of Dublin [Troy] supports Burke's requests and suggests that Erskine be contacted. PF notes.
