M. A very detailed report on the state of the diocese of Québec, as requested by PF in its letters of 28 Nov. 1792 [see Lettere 400] and 4 July 1793 [see Lettere 404]. The report deals with the history of the diocese; its subdivisions (Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland, Louisiana, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon); the diocese of Baltimore; necessity of a new bishopric in Montréal; the Anglican clergy; the Indian missions; Jesuits and Recollets; the state of the clergy (160 priests, of whom seven in Nova Scotia, four in Upper Canada, and the rest in Lower Canada); the Séminaire de Québec; the Sulpicians in Montréal; seven communities of nuns; the number of Catholics (they are 160,000) and of the Protestants (20,000); the increasing licentiousness.
