the writer acknowledges the addressee's letter [of 8 Nov. 1790; see SOCG 607, C 210], and approves his attitude toward the university and the dispute with his coadjutor [Bailly de Messein]. He is also congratulated on the 34, 000 confirmations. This letter deals with various topics: the coadjutor's jurisdiction and faculties; the suppression of some holidays; the 12 [recte 4] Recollets of Québec with their superior [Berey Des Essarts]. Futhermore, as the abp. of Dublin [Troy] has written that Edward or Edmund Barke [Edmund Burke, 1753-1820] plans to travel as missionary to the Northwest, the addressee is requested to enquire as to the number of Catholics,

whether they depend on the bp. of Québec, the Spanish bp. of Nouvelle-Orléans [not yet appointed] or the bp. of Baltimore [Carroll], and to assess the said priest.
