The addressee is thanked for forwarding the letter of the agent of the Oneidas, La Mahotière [see C 365]. The Oneidas, converted to Catholicism, request the appointment of Le Tonnelier de Coulonges as their bp., and six French Capuchins as missionaries. According to La Mahotière, these people seem totally free and independent, yet the addressee is requested to enquire whether they are under the jurisdiction of the bp. of Baltimore [Carroll] or of Québec [J.-F. Hubert], or within the borders of "Lusitania" [i.e., Louisiana], recently ceded [by the secret treaty of 3 Nov. 1762] from France to Spain, or in territory that is still in Bristish hands. All the said pieces of information will serve to assess the necessity for a new bishopric.
