The King [of France, Louis XIV] has often petitioned the Pope [Alexander VII] for the erection of a bishopric in Canada; abbé Montigny [Laval], who had been suggested for the appointment, is now bp. Petraea and vic. ap. [in Canada]; the erection itself was postponed on account of the lack of a stable contribution. Rome has now been informed that the King has donated the abbey of Méobec to the vic. ap.; the addressee must enquire which privileges are to be attached to the new bishopric, and whether the principles of the Gallican church extend to Canada.
