While a group of soldiers are in a clearing, a messenger arrives with a letter for a lieutenant des Villarès containing orders to find and arrest a group of counterfeiters operating in the area~Two young country girls cross the clearing and wave to the soldiers. The lieutenant follows them. The young girls split up; the lieutenant catches ups and surprizes one of them. He gives her flowers and they both leave arm in arm. They flirt for a moment, then the other young girl joins them and together they leave the lieutenant.~After making sure that they are not followed, they enter an underground hiding place with a grotto type entrance hidden in the woods. In a inn where the lieutenant is drinking with another soldier, a small boy enters carrying a basket and asks the innkeeper for some food. He pays with a counterfeit coin and leaves. The lieutenant and the soldier follow him to the entrance earlier used by the young girls, the small boy enters while the soldiers immobilize a sentinel. The lieutenant writes a note to a sergeant Joyeuse requesting that he comes to the cavern with troops and gives it to the soldier for delivery.~De Villarès then enters the hiding place of the counterfeiters but is captured and tied up. The young girl with whom he earlier flirted enters and is surprised to see him. The leader of the gang notices this and threatens to kill the lieutenant but the young girl gets between them.~The soldiers arrive and apprehend the counterfeiters. The young girl unties the lieutenant and begs for his fogiveness. He pushes her back with disdain but, when a soldier comes back asking if she should be arrested, he leaves her free. She kisses his hand. <28mn>
