AM. The writer recalls that his Irish confrères [Carr, Ennis] have gone to North America where they have been well received by the bp. of Baltimore [Carroll]. Following L. Neale's suggestions, they wrote to the Augustinian authorities and asked permission to establish Augustinian convents in Philadelphia and elsewhere. The request was granted and faculties were sent with a letter dated 27 Aug. [1796]; the American province was established and Carr was appointed vic. general. The same requests were reported in another letter from Philadelphia, dated 22 June [1796]. Notes [of the Secretariate of State?] (20 Jan. 1797; to PF). B: 240r.
