ALS. The writer received the addressee's letter of 19 Jan. [1788; see Lettere 349] of 5 Aug. [1788], and the letter of 12 July 1788 [see Lettere 355] on 18 Feb. [1789]. The two students [Ralph Smith, F. Dougherty] in Rome are doing well. The suspended priest in New York [Nugent] has appealed to the civil court. At the beginning of the Fall [1788] the writer sent a priest from Dublin [M. Ryan] to Charleston, in South Carolina. Thayer is still awaited in his native Boston. The writer granted temporary faculties to a French priest [Bouchard de La Poterie], who arrived at the end of the past year [1788]. The importance of the establishment of a school is stressed. In Apr. all opinions on a new bishopric will be collected and forwarded to Rome. Re [CG]/3 of 22 June 1789 [see Acta 217].
