Ross Eaman interviews Ronald Weyman, former CBC television drama producer. Weyman discusses: his career as a CBC producer; his early life in London, England and family background; his involvement in amateur theatre and designing and building of sets for Hart House productions; his enrolement in navigation course with the navy and his being detailed to the Royal Navy in 1940; his job as an anti-submarine control officer to the Home Fleet destroyer, HMS Achates; anecdotes of wartime career; his involvement with a film company in New York and Willard van Dyck; his work for the National Film Board following the war; his relationships with Ross McLean, Graham Spottiswood, Stewart Legge, and Syd Newman; his travels across the country and around the world for newsreels and films; FILE 1365 - THE COMMONS CASE, a film about the RCMP; promotion to producer-director at the NFB; his annoyance with the NFB's over-emphasis on impersonal technological forces in filmwork; comments on his approach to film; his transfer from the NFB to the CBC to work on ON CAMERA, FORD THEATRE and THE UNFORSEEN; classified as a producer-director in drama; his adaptation of GREAT EXPECTATIONS; Canadian content; TELL A STORYTIME; 1961, creation of THE SERIAL, an all-Canadian drama series about Canada; influence of the BBC; production of WOJECK; functions of producers and directors; QUENTIN DURGENS M.P. with Gordon Pinsent; CORWIN; THE ACTIONEER; general comments on the era of live drama in television; invitation by Twentieth-Century Fox to become a producer there; John Hirsch and his changes to CBC drama; and Weyman's conflicts with Hirsch on the approach to television drama. <3h 29mn>
