CG/8. Rel.: PF Secretary [E. Cibo]. [In his letter undated, but 1684; see SOCG 431], the Recollet provincial of Saint-Denis [Paris], Lefèvre, reports that one year previously [1682] a Recollet [Membré] with some seculars visited some unknown parts of New France; the King [of France, Louis XIV] sent some of his subjects accompanied by four friars [Douay, Le Clercq, Membré, Morguet] approved of by their ordinary; the petitioner asks for the usual faculties for them and for the title of missionary. The General of the order [Sormano] supports the petition. According to PF, the new land is ¨an island called Louisiana,¨ the ordinary the abp. of Paris [Harlay de Champvallon], the nearest bp. the bp. of Québec [Laval]. R: Faculties to be granted under the jurisdiction of the bp. of Québec.
