Ron Hallam interviews Gordon Glynn, former CBC journalist. Glynn discusses: his early journalistic career writing publicity columns for teenage clubs in weekly papers; at 19, he began work with North Toronto Herald; joined the CBC in 1950 as a copy clerk in the radio national newsroom; his trip to England one year later; his work as a summer relief reporter in CBC Montreal English newsroom; permanent position with CBC in Windsor; his transfer from radio to television in 1953; rapid growth and acceptance of TV and its impact on the development of news; early TV reporters; early facilities; TABLOID with Gil Christie and Ross Maclean; development of news into a separate department in the new CBC television network; gradual recognition of television news over radio news; barriers to full network news service; format for newscasts; John Lent, initial producer of news for television; Larry Henderson, first national news reader; special news events; international crises such as the Suez Crisis and the Hungarian Revolution; coverage of elections; his roles as producer and director of elections; expansion of CBC news coverage of events such as elections; influence of the Canadian press; Bill Cunningham, chief news editor for the CBC in 1965 and his creation of the first television national news reporter; relations between national and regional news operations; Glynn's transfer to Vancouver and his views on regional news production; difficulty in attracting qualified personnel for news commentaries and production; Bill Hogg; changes in television news and the use of kinescope; his involvement in the use of live cut-ins to newscasts; personal anecdotes on CBC television; his memories of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth; competition of CBC with American networks; and news stories in the early years more difficult than in radio or press. <1h 13mn>
