Ross Eaman interviews Neil Morrison, former Head of Talks and Public Affairs and Audience Research at the CBC. Morrison discusses: his background; growing up on the prairies in a middle-class Presbyterian family; university studies; moves to McGill for graduate studies and work for Student Christian Movement; being hired by Ned Corbett, CBC, to research broadcasting in small communities; farm listening groups, format of "2-way" show; concepts of public broadcasting; life in the Depression; social movements; role of radio in social action; listening groups project evolved into FARM RADIO FORUM; staff of 1930s and 1940s; Gladstone Murray; other people Ned Corbett recruited; Donald Buchanan; 1940, works under Orville Shugg; FARM FORUM moves from Public Affairs to Farm Broadcasting; format, preparation of show, results, expansion, guest, experts, regional shows, complaints; CITIZENS' FORUM; set up with the Adult Education Assocation; 1943, Head of Public Affairs; politics and CITIZENS' FORUM; accusation of leftist bias; controversial broadcasting; rows within CBC and with government; conflicts between management/program staff; 1943 plan to cancel FORUM; balanced representation of views; row with ACTRA over unionization of commentators; phone-in shows like NIGHTLINE; CBC involvement in Couchiching Conference on Public Affairs; importance of CBC independence; staff hired to perpetuate programs, tend to become bureaucrats, lose ideological thrust; staff of Talks and Public Affairs, early 1950s; "prestige areas" of broadcasting; experiments with format; CAPITAL REPORT; SUNDAY MORNING; and MORNINGSIDE. <2h 9mn>
