John Doherty interviews Karl Hilmer about the unionization of the CBC. Hilmer discusses: his education in Germany; first jobs at the CBC and working conditions; involvement in IATSE and CUPE and reasons for involvement; problems with IATSE; relations with Hugh Sedgwick; IATSE and the CBC in the 1950s; early days of IATSE and the CBC; problems creative people had with unions; 1957 attempt to decertify IATSE; the attempt to establish the Canadian Television Union; reasons for CUPE selection after CTU was rejected; first organizing drive in 1965-1966 by CUPE and the CNTU; second organizing drive between 1966-68 by CUPE and NABET; ARTEC joins CUPE in 1968; problems between ARTEC and the production staff in Montreal after ARTEC joined CUPE; the withdrawal of the Monteal production staff from CUPE; the reasons for the split by Montreal production; response in CUPE Toronto to Montreal's withdrawal; CBC's management's response to the CUPE raid; IATSE's record in negotiations in the early 1960s; Sedgwick, IATSE and the membership problems; involvement of the mafia in IATSE: response of the membership to the lack of a contract during the raid; CUPE's bargaining committee structure; membership involvement in the first years of CUPE; reasons for the decline in participation in the union; negotiations between CUPE and the CBC during the first several contracts; effect of Quebec-Canada tensions on contract negotiations; CUPE's relations with the federal government and management; background to Montreal's withdrawal from CUPE; differences in negotiations strategies between Montreal and Toronto; structure and approach of CUPE organizing committeee from 1965 to 1968; reasons why an effective union was needed in TV; response of creative people to the new TV industry; supporters of NABET; pro-IATSE leaders; Hilmer's relations with management; response of the CLC to CUPE's raid on IATSE; and members of Toronto IATSE executive trying to meet IATSE executive in Toronto.~Hilmer also compares the IATSE today and CUPE's Broadcast Division. <1h 4mn>
