Denise McConney interviews Max Ferguson, the voice of RAWHIDE on CBC radio. Ferguson comments on: his early life in England; his family history and his move to Canada; his activities and interests during high school; life at the University of Western Ontario; his interest in radio at university; application to CBC as a bilingual announcer; his summer at CFPL London and transfer to Halifax in 1946; the beginning of RAWHIDE soon after he arrived in Halifax; his duties and range of interests in Halifax; Royal Tour broadcast in Toronto in 1939; HARMONY HARBOUR which was songs of the sea interspersed with scripts by Frank Doyle about Maritime historical events; transfer to Toronto with RAWHIDE to broadcast on full national network; reaction to the program in Parliament; reasons for leaving the CBC and the conflict that ensued; his return to Halifax where he hosted GAZETTE; TABLOID and Ross Maclean; attempts to adapt RAWHIDE for television; Alan McFee; Lorne Greene's style of announcing; comments on TABLOID and OPEN HOUSE; "The Night of the Long Knives" in Halifax when Toronto fired most of the executives and administrators; loyalty of the Maritime audience; Bill Reid; favourite skits; Bill Stephenson; anecdotes about the aftermath and the impact of his skits; the FLQ crisis and the skit he wrote on it; CBC management's trust in Ferguson's judgement; CBC strike; his return to Toronto in 1976; eventual return to the airwaves in 1982 with a music program as a summer replacement whcich became a fall program; comments on his books and his style of writing; production problems of his material; PERCHANCE TO DREAM and HONARIS CAUSA; political impersonations and Feguson's characters; Gordon Sinclair; receiving the Order of Canada; Davidson Dunton; Cuban missle crisis; RAWHIDE; David Lewis; Eugene Whelan; Kate Aitken; Peter Ustinov; and Canadian comedy and humour. <3h 46mn>
