This is a preliminary description, please consult the linked accessions. Sub-series consists of registers known as the 'Black Binders' and are a record for registering with the Imperial War Graves Commission the graves of CEF members killed in Belgium and France during the First World War.

The registers are arranged in alphabetic order with each register page indicating service number; rank; name; unit; the date of death; cause and place of death; casualty sheet number; date of burial; location of grave; and information on the next of kin and the communication of the grave location to the next of kin. In cases where there was no known grave, the page will be stamped with the memorial on which the name of the individual is inscribed, eg. Vimy Memorial; Menin Gate.

These registers appear to have been compiled after the war from the information in the Brown Binders and from individual service files. It should be noted that the post-war movement of graves, of which there is sometimes a series of movements, will be recorded in these registers.

The Directorate of Records of the Department of National Defence created and maintained these registers in Ottawa. (See Accession 1992-93/314, containers 39 to 144)

Custodial history:

After the creation of the Department of Veterans Affairs, these records were transferred to the War Service Records Division. When the Public Archives of Canada took over responsiblity for historical military service records in 1971, these records were also transferred to the PAC.
