Original Sir Oliver Mowat button from ca. 1903. A real sepia photo button with photograph of Mowat at centre. This was an in memorium button possibly made for Mowat's funeral or shortly thereafter. Made in Toronto by the Photo Jewelry Mfg. Co.: blindstamp verso on metal backing. Rare.

Sir Oliver Mowat, was a lawyer and politician, and 3rd premier of Ontario from 1872-1896. Mowat was brought up a Conservative, but opted for the Reform Party, becoming a prominent Reform leader in the province. He served as provincial secretary, and was postmaster general. He was an active participant in the Quebec Conference, and a father of Confederation. He held the appointment of chancellor of Ontario from 1864 to 1872, then served as premier and attorney general until 1896 when he was appointed to the Senate and then federal minister of justice. Knighted in 1892, he left Ottawa in 1897 to become lieutenant-governor of Ontario. Under Mowat's leadership, Ontario advanced economically, socially and politically.
