Round political button. Black and white photo of Laurier at centre of button. Decorative gold edging to the photo and on a red background. Original Wilfrid Laurier Button. The mark on the back reveals that it was made by Whitehead & Hoag, the company that in the late 1800s first developed and patented the celluloid button. Celluloid buttons would be used for the first time in the 1896 American presidential campaign, and although manufacturing technologies would evolve, the buttons of today remain similar to their celluloid predecessors. Either 1901 or 1906 campaign, should be 1901. Fine condition.

Statement of responsibility note:

The American company Whitehead & Hoag started in Newark, New Jersey in 1892 operating until the mid 20th century. It is credited with first developing and patenting the celluloid button. This successful company manufactued buttons, badges, banners, flags and advertising novelties. Its main plant was one of the largest of its kind in the world and its products were sold all over the civilized globe. The main business office was in Newark, NJ with branch offices maintained in 30 leading cities, including one in London, England.
