At this time in his life he is to be married to Reta who loves him and whom he loves. However, he is haunted by dreams of power and wealth, and encouraged in his fantasies by a mysterious voice. Overcome by pride and belief in his own powers, he leaves Reta on their wedding day and turns to a bloody career of slave-trading, piracy and murder. After years, master of his own ship, with a lurid history of crimes, he decides to look for Reta again. He arrives at her funeral and is in despair because no one now prays for him. The voice reveals itself to be the Evil One and Vanderdecken has no choice but to return to sea. In a storm which blows up he defies God and vows to sail his ship until Judgement Day. This becomes his fate. He cannot die, but must sail his ship until Judgement Day. <1h>Language:EnglishDetailed holdings information: -
