The image depicts a naval engagement between the British frigate HMS Quebec and the French frigate Surveillante in the action of October 6, 1779.

This print depicts the end of the engagement where the HMS Quebec was on fire and about to explode. Her British soldiers jump off or hold onto something in the water before the fire reaches the magazine. The Surveillante remains out of harms way but its masts and rigging are down after weathering the earlier bombardment.
