Note: Wentworth is known to have done lithographs and engraving and it is assumed that he prepared the stone and plates himself (see Anthony K. Slosek, Thomas Hanford Wentworth - Oswego's First Artist, p.9, research paper on artist file 705-2028). This impression appears to have been taken when the plate was worn. Some small details (eg: figures and dog in l.r.) appear to have been reworked., Black Rock is on the American side of the Niagara River opposite Fort Erie, Ontario and just north of downtown Buffalo, NY. It is notable as an American Naval Base during the war of 1812. From here the Americans attacked and secured Fort Erie in July 1814. Following the war a ferry ran between Black Rock and the Canadian side (see information in artist file). The ferry can be seen on the left side of the image transporting a horse and carriage.
