Note from: Joe Rosenthal, "Indians, a Sketching Odyssey", p. 18: "I was very impressed also by an old man who called me over one day, told me his name was Thomas, and sked me whether I would do his portrait...Mr. Thomas's wife was to be included in the picture, and he called to her to come out of the house. She shuffled out - a large, heavy-featured blind woman with grey, unkempt hair...He next brought out two large wooden masks which he had carved and which were to be in the picture as well".
