The watercolour is covered recto by a flat glass cover and the verso convex glass cover reveals checkerboard plaited human hair beneath; the portrait is of a young man with powdered hair, wearing a red and indigo blue uniform with gold epaulettes, white sash with a pin or miniature on the breast on sash, gold buttons, black collar cravat, and shirt with white ruffles at throat; the sitter is turned 3/4 to viewer's right; the miniature at acquisition was housed in a blue velvet covered plastic case, Frame measurement includes top suspension loop of locket, The inscribed surname is slightly different from the name used by the vendor which was Johnston. The vendor also stated that Johnston(e) was related to Stephen Sewell by marriage. Both the spelling of the name and family relationship have yet to be researched and verified.
