Support 21.500 x 28.300 cmScope and content:Description from condition report February 25, 1974 (on accession and artist file): "Sepia on paper, mounted on cardboard, many spot stains, there is another picture on the back (partly covered by glued paper) done with water color and pastel, it has been damaged by attemp[t]s to remove the paper"., Label removed from backing paper on frame: typewritten label, t.: "SEPIA WASH DRAWING - BRITISH SOLDIERS AT Q[UE]BEC IN / THE WINT[ER] c.1850."; printed framer's label below: Rolland Picture Frame / Picture Framing - Oil Painting / Oil Paintings - Restored / 2350 GUY ST. MONTREAL / 932-9739., Francis Augustus Grant was a member of the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders), coming to Canada in June 1848. He was appointed an aide-de-camp to his uncle, James Bruce, the 8th Earl of Elgin, then Governor General of the province of Canada in October 1848. He died of illness while serving in the Crimea in 1854 (not of wounds as inscription on the secondary support says)., Dimensions of secondary support 25.6 x 33.2 cm., There is a badly damaged watercolour landscape laid down to verso of secondary support (card); a sheet of paper laid down to surface of the watercolour has been partially removed, leaving the image damaged; it still partially covers image; image has no visible inscriptions., Title as given does not appear on the watercolour.Additional name(s):Additional information:Signatures and inscriptions note:Inscribed.
