Television documentary program on Communist China. The program is in two parts: a documentary film narrated by Harry Mannis is interrupted midway by a panel discussion on various aspects of Chinese life and thought. The film portrays the Chinese as an industrious and frugal people, moving cautiously into the technological age while retaining the age-old methods of agriculture and transportation, and many of their cultural and social customs. The narration, sprinkled with quotations from Chairman Mao's writings, describes how tradition and the revolutionary ideas of the People's Republic co-exist in this vast and varied country. Noteworthy scenes include: Mao Tse-Tung; marching crowd; agriculture collecting river silt; orchards; Szechuan Mountains; terracing; moving earth by shoulder poles; hand-planting rice; peasant women working in the fields; antique wagons loaded with human and animal waste for fertilizer; Mongol horses ridden by nomadic people in the north; North China plain; Great-Wall; Soldiers fishing; Manchuna; Mongolia; Chinese Turkestan; comets in snow; on the Yangste River; street scenes in Shanghai; day-care centres in modern-day China; and Chinese theatre conveying a political message. The panel consists of: Gordon Hawkins, Chairman; Patrick Watson; Professor Wing Tsit Chan of Chatham College, Pennsylvania; and Professor W.A.C.H. Dobson of the University of Toronto who discuss the topic of China from their various viewpoints and areas of knowledge. The discussion touches on: the ethical and religious convictions which influence Chinese characteristics as opposed to those of the western world; Confucianism and how the writings of Mao Tse Tung relate to it; Mao's adaptation of Marxism in China; the cohesive force of written Chinese; the different philosophies of East and West; and the roles of family education, law and entertainment in Communist China. <60mn>
