Powell / 1873 / below image c: "WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND THEY ARE OURS." / The Battle of Lake Erie-10 September 1813/ l.c.: Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry is shown transferring his flag from USS LAWRENCE to USS NIAGARA during the engagement of the British and American Squadrons on Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The longer range / guns of the British flagship, HMS DETROIT, succeeded in disabling every gun and shooting away LAWRENCE's sails. In NIAGARA which had been held back by light wind , Perry cut through the British fleet, severely damaging / and disorganizing the enemy. The smaller ships of the American fleet then joined in defeating the British.
